Ambitious European renewable targets by 2050
An article by Euractiv reveals that the European Commission is preparing an update of its low-carbon economy roadmap for 2050, aiming for a carbon neutral economy by mid-century.
According to Euractiv, the EU would aim for 100% emission cuts in its new ‘mid-century roadmap’, currently under preparation. A public consultation with a view to updating its low-carbon economy roadmap in 2018 could be launched soon.
First published in 2011, the 2050 low-carbon economy roadmap laid the foundations for the EU’s climate and energy policy in the years ahead, aiming for a reduction of at least 80% in the bloc’s emissions by mid-century, in line with international commitments. However, Commission’s officials would now consider this insufficient, especially to meet the Paris Agreement goal of keeping climate change below 2°C.
A source involved in the preparation of the new roadmap said that officials were now starting to lay the groundwork. The roadmap would be made in connection with a 2018 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, that will chart pathways to keep global temperature increase below 1.5°C. Such a strategy, if implemented, could lead to a zero-carbon economy by 2050.
