Belarus: European Bank for Reconstruction and Development backs construction of a biogas plant
Facility is the first under a cooperation agreement with the country’s government and the EBRD.
The first biogas plant built under an agreement between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Belarus government is now operational.
EBRD said in a statement on 1 December that the plant was located in Baranovichi, a city in the west of the country.
According to the statement, EBRD loaned €2.9m to the plant, which also received €2.2m from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.
The plant will generate 4,380 MWh of electricity and a similar amount of heat through processing biogas produced from wastewater sludge. It will be owned and operated by the Baranovichi Water and Wastewater Company.
EBRD head of belarus, Alexander Pivovarsky, said: “The Baranovichi project has become a trailblazer in practical implementation of municipal investments, in compliance with our high environmental and social standards, and is paving the way for further municipal engagements in Belarus.”
In total, the EBRD, SIDA and the Northern Dimension Environmental Partnership have providing €27.2m to three municipalities: Baranovichi, Vitebsk and Slonim, for the improvement of environmental infrastructure and wastewater services.
