European project SYSTEMIC: call for anaerobic digestion plants

Within the project SYSTEMIC a call is launched for “10 outreach locations”: anaerobic digestion plants in search for innovative business opportunities for nutrient recovery!

On June 1 2017 the four-year European project SYSTEMIC (Systemic large scale eco-innovation to advance circular economy and mineral recovery from organic waste in Europe) was launched. The SYSTEMIC project aims to demonstrate how it can be economically viable to recover and recycle nutrients from digestate, resulting from the anaerobic digestion of bio-waste, animal manure and sewage sludge for agriculture.

Within the project a call is launched for “10 outreach locations”.

These outreach locations are locations willing to adapt the knowledge and experience gained from 5 demonstration plants, studied in the SYSTEMIC project, which have already implemented several nutrient recovery techniques.

Region-specific business cases

SYSTEMIC will develop region-specific business cases for the individual outreach locations taking into account the available resources and the need of minerals and organic amendments in the region.

This supplies the outreach locations with the necessary information on the technological possibilities, the operational aspects, mass and energy balances and product qualities which enables them to evaluate their own specific business cases and to decide upon an investment (yet SYSTEMIC does not oblige the outreach locations to eventually invest).

If so, business models with nutrient recovery techniques will be and concrete investors and innovators will be brought together. This forms the basis for further exploitation of the newly developed nutrient recycling and recovery technologies and business cases.

Conditions for participation

If you are (1) an innovative anaerobic digestion plant owners or operator, (2) an entrepreneur interested in nutrient recovery, or if you have(3) future plans for a anaerobic digestion plant and want to develop innovative business models including anaerobic digestion, you are eligible to participate as an outreach location within the project SYSTEMIC.

Other conditions for participation are:

  • Attending about 4 project meetings in the period 2017 – 2020 in order to exchange views and knowledge on the needs and applicability of the project’s method and other key events of common interest which are relevant for the outcome and dissemination of the project.

Travel and hotel costs to attend the meetings will be reimbursed.

  • Capacity AD-plant / future AD-plant / business model of at least 15.000 tons/year.
  • Supply information on your current business case, feedstock and product characteristics, and mass and energy balances.
  • Approval for dissemination of your business case (no confidential information) through workshops, factsheets, etc.

Extra information

More detailed information on participating as an outreach location can be found in multiple languages on https://systemicproject.eu/the-10-outreach-plants/

Final date to for application as outreach location is 1 December.
