Consorzio Italiano Biogas (CIB) among the circular economy champions

Held in Brussels at the end of April 2017, a Legambiente event acknowledged the Italian Consortium of Biogas and Gasification as a leading national organisation in biogas and biomethane promotion.

The prestigious participants, among which Commissioner and Vice-President of the European Commission Jyrki Katainen, Ms Simona Bonafè (Member of the European Parliament from the Socialists & Democrats group in charge of the circular economy package) and Legambiente’s President Mr Stefano Ciafani, strongly supported President of CIB Mr Piero Gattoni in his vision for anaerobic digestion. Biogas, the industrial product of approximately 1500 plants in Italy, is currently estimated to 9.37 TWh of electricity. Mr Gattoni pointed out that the main advantage of the technology is that – under the biogasdoneright® guidelines – biomethane and biogas production is carbon negative. Furthermore, thanks to a new forthcoming decree, the potential for biomethane production in Italy should reach 8,5 cubic meters by 2030, meeting 15% of Italian demand for natural gas.
