European biomethane workshop – registration closed
Due to overwhelming response the registration for the European Workshop on Biomethane had to be closed earlier than expected. EBA thanks all registered participants for their interest and invites them to take a look at the workshop’s programme.
On 11 March 2014 in Brussels three EU projects will held a joint workshop on biomethane markets, value chains and applications. The common objective of GreenGasGrids, Urban Biogas and Biomaster, projects co-funded by the European Commission, is to promote biogas production, upgrading to biomethane for injection into the gas grid and use in vehicles and to demonstrate how to overcome the impasse by bringing the key components of the biomethane chain into a joint initiative. After three years of work project partners will present achieved results, among others:
- Biomethane Road Map and Certification
- Standards for biomethane injected into gas grids and as a fuel
- Sustainability of biomethane
- Case Studies from Italy, Croatia, Austria, UK
- Conversion Technologies and Utilisation of Biomethane

The UrbanBiogas Project
The objective of UrbanBiogas is to promote the use of organic urban waste for biogas production in 5 European cities in order to inject biomethane into the natural gas grid and to use it in transport.
The objective is to prepare European target cities for the production of biomethane from urban waste which will be fed into the natural gas grids and optionally used for transport. The target cities are: City of Zagreb (Croatia), Municipality of Abrantes (Portugal), City of Graz (Austria), City of Gdynia and Rzeszów (Poland), and North Vidzeme Region including the City of Valmiera (Latvia). Core of the project is elaboration of five Waste-toBiomethane (WtB) concepts for the target cities.
The GreenGasGrids Project
GreenGasGrids aims to substantially contribute to realising a significant contribution of biomethane to the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) targets of 20% renewable energy and 10% renewable energy in transport in 2020 as well as the renewable energy targets set by individual EU Member States in their Renewable Energy Action Plans.
The project’s objective is to measurably increase the production and use of biomethane for transport, heat and electricity by addressing the most hindering barriers to biomethane deployment in the EU, both in forerunner and starter countries. Therefore the project works on solving questions on sustainability aspects, recommendations for technical standards, tackling trade barriers and evaluating policy targets.
The BIOMASTER Project
The ambition of BIOMASTER is to exploit the potential of biomethane production, grid injection and use for transport and to bring the key components of the biomethane chain into a joint initiative, stimulating investments, removing non-technological barriers and mobilising action for uptake.The qualifying characters of BIOMASTER is the commitment of a “waste-to-wheel” partnership and the set-up of networks to involve local stakeholders. Tbhe project comprises 17 partners, 5 Country members and 4 application sites: Małoposka Region (Poland), Norfolk County (United Kingdom), Skåne Region (Sweden) and Trentino Province (Italy).
