The European Parliament debates on Energy Union

The ITRE committee of the European Parliament (EP) held discussions on May 28 on its report on European Energy Union.

The EP is keen on working alongside the European Commission (which published its Energy Union Strategy back in February) and, therefore, the EP appointed rapporteurs in charge of this file in the ITRE and ENVI Committees. This report will be the first formal document marking the Parliament’s priorities within the concept of the European Energy Union.

Future legislation related to the Energy Union Strategy of the Commission is subject to the ordinary legislative procedure where the European Parliament co-decides together with the Council of the EU. Therefore the views of MEPs in this report will give strong signals to the Commission which is in charge of proposing legislation.

The vote for the adoption of the report is foreseen in September.
