Biomethane Purchase Agreement Playbook Webinar

16.09.2026

To mark the launch of the Biomethane Purchase Agreement Playbook, the European Biogas Association invites you to a webinar on 16 September from 10:00 to 11:05 to explore how long-term biomethane purchase agreements can support the scale-up of the European biomethane market.

Biogases will play an important role in the European Union’s ambition to strengthen energy resilience, support industrial competitiveness and achieve a net zero future by 2050. In 2022, the European Commission established a political target under the REPowerEU plan to produce 35 billion cubic metres of biomethane annually by 2030. This objective aims to enhance energy security and support the EU’s climate goals by providing a renewable, domestically produced gas that can directly substitute fossil natural gas across multiple sectors of the economy.

Despite progress since 2022, current developments show that the EU is not yet on track to meet this target. In 2024, Europe produced 5 bcm of grid-quality biomethane and 17 bcm of biogas for combined heat and power. As such, biomethane production today still represents only a modest share of Europe’s overall gas consumption, meaning significant scale-up is required. Produced domestically, biomethane strengthens energy independence and reduces Europe’s exposure to global gas market volatility, at a time when the EU still imports around 90% of its gas.

Long-term purchasing agreements, also known as biomethane purchase agreements (BPAs), can play an important role in scaling the European biomethane market. They can enable offtakers to secure long-term renewable gas supply while giving producers the revenue certainty needed to finance new biomethane plants. Importantly, BPAs can also unlock investment in markets where production subsidy support is limited or unavailable.

This webinar will present the key findings of the new EBA Playbook and discuss how BPAs can help de-risk investments, strengthen demand signals and support the development of a more competitive and investment-friendly biomethane market in Europe.

The webinar will cover:

  • The role of BPAs in scaling Europe’s biomethane market
  • Launch of the Biomethane Purchase Agreement Playbook
  • How BPAs can support investment certainty for producers and supply security for offtakers
  • The role of industrial demand in accelerating biomethane deployment
  • Policy and market conditions needed to support long-term offtake agreements
  • Industry perspective from producer benefiting BPAs
  • Q&A with expert speakers
