Biomethane Market Acceleration and Uptake in Europe

Project duration: 2025 – 2028

BIOMAPE is a Horizon Europe–funded project designed to accelerate the production, market uptake, and integration of biomethane across Europe, supporting the EU’s transition toward a more sustainable and resilient energy system.

Biomethane represents a renewable alternative to fossil fuels, but its large‑scale deployment in Europe faces several barriers, including fragmented policies, limited market coordination, technical challenges, and varying levels of public acceptance.

To address these issues, BIOMAPE adopts a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach that combines technical innovation, policy development, and stakeholder engagement. The project focuses on three main activity areas:

  • Biomethane certificates and cross‑border trade, aiming to improve transparency and facilitate efficient trading across countries
  • Policy and market development, supporting harmonisation of regulations and enabling stronger, more integrated biomethane markets
  • Social acceptability, fostering public awareness and engagement to build trust and support for biomethane technologies

These activities are supported by a broader framework built on key pillars such as multi‑level governance (local to EU), policy alignment, social acceptance, and knowledge transfer. The project works closely with policymakers, industry stakeholders, and local communities to ensure that solutions are practical, scalable, and widely adopted.

Over its implementation period (2025–2028), BIOMAPE will contribute to the creation and strengthening of biomethane registries in multiple countries and promote cross‑border cooperation, helping to create a transparent and efficient European biomethane market. It also includes stakeholder engagement activities such as workshops, case studies, and local dialogue initiatives to improve societal acceptance and address concerns about biomethane deployment.
