Biogases: Europe’s overlooked path to energy independence?

22.04.2026

Europe’s transition to a climate‑neutral and secure energy system has underscored the need to better exploit domestic, renewable energy sources. Recent geopolitical shocks have revealed the risks of reliance on imported fossil fuels, prompting renewed interest in energy solutions that can simultaneously enhance energy security and decarbonisation. Within this context, biogas and biomethane remain comparatively under‑recognised despite their ability to provide renewable, storable, and dispatchable energy using existing gas infrastructure.

This report reassesses Europe’s sustainable biogases production potential based on a new Guidehouse analysis for the European Biogas Association. Building on updated data and methodologies, it evaluates how biogases could contribute to Europe’s energy independence targets across 2030, 2040, and 2050. The findings highlight biogases as a scalable and strategic component of Europe’s long‑term energy and climate strategy, capable of delivering both system flexibility and wider socio‑economic benefits.
