‘Small is Beautiful’: clean energy campaign launched

Trade associations representing key players in Europe’s energy transition have released a ‘Small is Beautiful’ declaration urging policy makers to support small installations for a clean energy in the European union.

The European Union has made a clear commitment to have global leadership in renewable energies. The Clean Energy Package should be the main driver of this ambition.

To achieve this objective, the new Electricity Market Design framework must balance efforts to encourage large-scale rapid deployment of renewables, while encouraging smaller scale, locally owned, distributed renewable energy.

The signatories of this declaration urge policy makers to acknowledge the specificities of small-scale renewable installations in the Electricity Market Design regulatory framework.

As assessed by the European Commission in its impact assessment on the Clean Energy Package, removing the current exemption regime for small installations on balancing responsibilities and priority dispatch will result in heavy technical and administrative burdens on companies; and be prohibitive for small actors including small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) who wish to engage in the energy transition.
