Germany: replacing Russian gas with biomethane feasible

By 2030 Germany can become independent from the Russian gas – reports Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology (IWES) in its study „Erdgassubstitution durch eine forcierte Energiewende“.

Germany consumed about 900 terawatt hours (TWh) of natural gas in 2013, out of which 814 TWh were imported, in majority from Russia. The IWES study explains how the height of today’s import volume from Russia can be replaced by a mix of energy conservation, energy efficiency and natural gas substitution already by 2030.

The study “natural gas substitution by a forced energy transition” explains how the height of today’s import volume in Russia can be replaced by a mix of energy conservation, energy efficiency and natural gas substitution already in 2030. Also biomethane can bring an important contribution to the reduction of gas imports, in particular thanks to its extreme flexibility in energy use and feedstock variety.
