France: Biogas projects tender launch
France’s environment and energy management agency ADEME has launched a tender for biogas projects in the country’s southern Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur (PACA) region.
The tender was launched in co-operation with the Groupe Energies Renouvelables, Environnement et Solidarites (GERES), an environmental NGO. Finance partners for the tender include the regional branch of ADEME, the PACA local government, and GDF Suez, according to GERES.
Applications are due by 1 December for projects using organic waste materials for cogeneration, heating or fuel. Companies within the agricultural, industrial and food sectors are eligible to apply, as are community projects.
France aims to grow its biogas sector with a call for 1,500 new power plants by September 2017. The country raised its feed-in tariff for power produced by biogas-fired cogeneration installations in late July.
According to GERES, growing regulation of waste disposal in the PACA region has increased the amount of organic waste that must be sorted and treated. While anaerobic digestion is one solution, the organisation says the region’s two biogas plants are insufficient to treat its annual production of 1.1 million tonnes of organic waste.
In addition to the tender, GERES plans to stimulate biogas project development in the region through policy initiatives and support services.
