France: New power plant to generate power from cheese production

A local operator is in charge of this facility located in the French Alps.

In order to generate energy, the plant uses whey, a byproduct of cheese production, which the company receives from Beaufort cheese made in the same region.

The cheese plant is located in the town of Albertville and uses Beaufort cheese to produce biogas through anaerobic digestion.

From here, gas powers an engine that heats water up to 90°, pumping out 2.8 million kWh per year.

The Albertville cheese plant currently sells energy to Électricité de France (EDF), the largest producer of electricity in the world, proving that cheese production process is definitely a viable source of energy production moving forward.
