India will build 5,000 biogas plants over the next five years
Dharmendra Pradhan, the Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, announced in early October 2018 that it would build up to 5,000 biogas plants over the next five years. Agricultural residues, liquid manure and municipal waste are to be fermented. A total of Rs 1.75 lakh crore should be invested.
In addition, Minister Pradhan announced that state fuel marketing companies should buy the biogas from these facilities at Rs 46 (about € 0.54) per kg to reduce India’s dependency on oil imports.
India currently relies more than 81% on imports to meet its oil needs. The conversion to biogas, which u.a. from wastes such as agricultural residues, manure, sugar cane, household waste and sewage sludge is to reduce this.
