Italy: Former Camorra territory will be used for biogas production

A 1 MW biogas plant will be built in an agricultural complex seized from the Italian mafia.

With a planned investment of around €9m, the new plant in Santa Maria La Fossa will process buffalo manure into electricity and heating. The project has been promoted by Agrorinasce, an innovation agency based on a consortium formed by the municipalities Casal di Principe, Casapesenna, San Cipriano d’Aversa, Santa Maria La Fossa, Santa Marcellino and Villa Literno.

Giovanni Allucci, Chief Executive of Agrorinasce, has praised the project stating that this investment in clean energy will, for sure, result in great benefits for the local community.

Since its founding in 1998, Agrorinasce manages more than 120 properties seized from the local mafia, including 40 sites funded by the Italian Ministry of the Environment among other public authorities.
