The European Commission suspends the revision of the Fertilisers Regulation

On the 16th of March The European Commission interrupted its work on the revision of the Fertilisers Regulation which aimed to introduce organic fertilisers (compost and digestate) into EU law at an equal footing with mineral fertilisers.

The decision to stop working on the revision was a political move coming from the top of the Commission which aims to have “less but better regulation”. It is possible that the Commission will try to introduce organic fertilisers via  a new Circular Economy Package proposal expected at the end of 2015, although this is not yet certain. In the absence of European legislation on organic fertilisers, national laws determine the status of digestate within each country.

EBA will closely follow this issue and will work with the aim to reintroduce this topic within the Commission’s work programme as soon as possible.
