US: Food waste as feedstock for the production of biogas

A US recycling service provider opened the food recovery service utilising anaerobic digestion for biogas production.

The company based in Maine stated that the new service they are providing, the food waste recovery, will contribute to the member communities to reach the statewide recycling goal of 50% by 2021.

Company’s chairman of the board, Mr Troy Moon said: “Recent studies have shown that organic materials make up about 40% of our waste stream. Half of that is food scraps. Providing towns and businesses with an easy way to divert this material from the waste stream will help our communities be more sustainable and may save them money.”

The food waste will be collected at the company and then transported to the anaerobic digester for energy recovery or composting.
